I recently interviewed the lovely Erin who runs the super stylish blog Calivintage. Here’s what she had to say:
Why did you decide to become a blogger and create Calivintage?
Way back when, as a young high school student, my first real job was selling vintage clothing and antiques for a local junk shop on eBay. As a kid with a serious obsession for vintage clothing, I continued to sell the vintage pieces I found at thrift stores and compulsively purchased, despite my budget and regardless of whether or not they actually fit me! Fast forward to 2008. I was styling my vintage duds for my eBay shop every day and secretly snapping photos of my outfits. I discovered that there were girls sharing their outfits in online communities like Wardrobe Remix, and I mustered up the courage to start my blog as a space for me to share my eBay updates and sneak in a few of my outfits here and there.
How would you describe your style?
I should probably be better at describing my own style, but I really never know what to say to this question! I suppose I dress like a Northern California girl with a thrifting addiction. Lately, I get dressed with a bit of a sense of humor, incorporating silly cat prints or cartoonish sunglasses. I never take myself too seriously when getting dressed.
Who/What influences your sartorial style?
Vintage clothing! Whether I saw some epic piece in an old movie, or it was something I saw digging for treasures at a thrift store, antique shop, or vintage boutique. You find the most unique pieces that come with their own story, real or imagined. It sparks my imagination, and it's what guides my personal style. Of course, I'm also addicted to watching all of the designer collections as they hit the runways, so there's always a healthy dose of designer inspiration. My favorites are always those who bring back a bit of the past with their own unique twist.
Do you have a favourite blogger? If so who is it and why?
I could never narrow down my list of favorite bloggers to just one gal. I honestly have a reader filled with over 300 blogs, so it just wouldn't be right to pick favorites! But if I had to choose a particular genre of fashion blogs, I would have to go with street style. I love to be able to see a very diverse range of styles from all different types of women, regardless of their shape, skin color, or income!
Where do you find all of your amazing clothing?
Most of my clothes come from online clothing boutiques and vintage shops with the very occasional designer purchase.
Tell us about your passion for bikes and your tumblr blog "Bikes+ Babes"
Having lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for the past 10 years, I would definitely say I fall into the category of "cycling enthusiast." It's a very bike friendly area, and home to some of the most beautiful scenic rides in the country. I enjoy riding my bike around town on the weekends, or going on epic tours across the California coastline. In my ideal world, there would be more cyclists on the road, so I started bikes + babes as a place to inspire young women to hop on their bikes as a mode of transportation, even if it's only every once in a while!
Any advice for new fashion bloggers?
My best piece of advice for new bloggers is to go out there and create your own unique content. That means embracing your own personal style and point-of-view in your outfits, writing, and layout rather than looking to other blogs for the magic formula. It’s great to be inspired, but in the end, you gotta be yourself if you wanna be heard!
