Well I did it- I bought a typewriter on eBay the Olivetti Lettera 32 and it will be shipped next week as stupid Paypal won’t convert my US funds into AU dollars. So frustrating!

One of the reasons I got a typewriter is because I want to start writing poetry again. Here is one of my favourite poems by Mary Elizabeth Frye. Other writers I love are Edgar Allen Poe and Alfred Lord Tennyson

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

Once I start writing again I will share some of poems on here. I wrote some really good ones in the past, some of which I have lost which is such a shame.

Book Review: Deja Vu of Love by Carol Cadoo

I was recently sent a book to review by the lovely Carol Cadoo. Her book Deja Vu of Love is currently available on amazon here

When I first began the book I was a little bit skeptical. Normally I am not one to delve into romance novels and much prefer thriller, non-fiction or fantasy based stories. But after the first chapter I was pretty much hooked. I honestly couldn't wait for my 3 hour journey to and from my job just so I could settle back and catch up on the wonderful and enticing life of Jazz Kelly.

The main character and protagonist Jazz Kelly is an amazing character. She starts of life with basically nothing, is given a chance of a lifetime and then ends up, again, with nothing. I loved her tenacity and the fact that she never gives up striving for her dreams no matter how wild they seem to the reader from time to time.
Another favourite character for me is Patrick. Oh wouldn't we all love a male friend of a non-sexual nature who would be willing to dote on us hand and foot? Well Patrick is that character and the book simply would not have been the same without his presence.

As much as I hate to admit it, the antagonist in this novel was a huge hit for me. Not only is she completely bonkers, sinister and manipulative but there is a secret she is holding that only comes out at the end. I must admit it was a bit of a shock for me, but explained a lot of the reasons behind her sadistic behaviours.
Although a love story, this book is so much more. It explores the life of a young woman and the struggles and successes she faces in the 1990's. The character development was great especially with the protagonist and antagonist but I did feel that there could have been more story and character development of Jazz Kelly's true love Gianni.

The editing of the book (like most Kindle novels) is in need of some work but it is not difficult to read. Overall I just enjoyed the story so much that this didn't really bother me.
I would have to compare the work of Carol Cadoo to the great romance novel writer Danielle Steel. Like Ms Steel's work, this book contained everything ones wants to see in a romance novel- a hard life, success, friendships, true love, evil losing and good winning out.

If you are a sucker for romance novels with a twist then I suggest getting this book as soon as possible. Be warned though, you may forget to sleep whilst reading. Enjoy.

How was your weekend? Mine was super crazy busy. I have officially put together my very first magazine which is available to view here: Phoebella Mag The Christmas Issue.
Please contact me if you are interested in ordering a hard copy.
Other than that I hope you enjoy it. I have received some amazing comments about it and I am really proud of how it turned out.
Other than this, this is what I wore to work on Thursday. This is one of my favourite dresses but it is getting more pulls in in which is unfortunate as I love it so much. I paired it with black tights and my gold Seychelles Mercury Oxfords for a more stylish look.
Hope everyone had a great weekend!

What I Want: Vintage Typewriter

vintage typewriters

At the moment I am totally obsessing over vintage typewriters. They are so stunning and great for vintage or shabby decor enthusiasts but I actually want one that works so I can write. Being a writer, there is something so magical about a typewriter, so minimalist even that is so much more pure than modern technology can provide.

I know I was born in the wrong era as I often pine for the good old days (and I was born in 1986!) but I can imagine writing a wonderful novel with one of these.

pink typewriters

I love all of the coloured ones but the do sell for quite a bit. I actually wanted an early 1900's one, you know the funky ones that are black with the beautiful round keys kind of like this one:

But seeing as I am poor and these ones usually don't have ribbons I have decided on probably getting a vintage Olivetti Lettera 32. They are really beautiful and were originally used by journalists back in the day- plus it comes in a nice green colour which is awesome.

What do you think? Any ideas on typewriters I can get please shoot me an email or leave a comment below!

Growing Up

What I Wore:
Life is like a game where you sometimes need to portray a powerful, image to show how eager you are to win. In the game called life where the competition is tight, have you ever wondered how others perceive you?
Sometimes I do. I try not to focus on this too much but with my personality type sometimes it is practically impossible.
By the way I am an IFSJ which means I am hard-working, dedicated and passionate but that I care too much what others think and need to be constantly reminded by others of my worth. I feel this mostly relates to work and have always felt I need to be "needed" and "appreciated". It also means that you sometimes allow others to take advantage of you which I do. Just ask my family although maybe not as they may try to pretend this has never happened!
From a young age I was worried about what people thought of me- do they think I'm ugly, not dresses nice, a good/bad worker, a good friend or not? Sometimes thinking like this is sure to drive one crazy!
But as the years have gone on I have learnt to try to tune these thoughts out. I know that I am happy with how I look, dress, feel and how I treat others- so why should it matter so much about other people's opinions. Why do we as human's care so much?

This week I have been thinking about my New Years Resolution for the start of 2012 which was to be happy. Sounds like a silly resolution but when you have suffered with depression from a young age sometimes being happy is all you truly want.

Although this entire year hasn’t been happy I think over the past few weeks I have found it. With my new lifestyle changes (diet and exercise) and the current loss of 4.5 kilos (9.25 pounds) I am really starting to appreciate what it means to be healthy and happy. I used to believe that happiness could only be achieved from the outside (career success, new shoes, what others think and of course FOOD) but none of these things were truly making me happy or the feeling was short-lasting.

I am still and probably always will be on the journey to finding true happiness, as most people are, but in the meantime I am starting to understand what makes me happy (being healthy, eating well, quality time with my cat, dog and family, making crafty things, writing, creating)

Scotty Dog Days

What I Wore:

  • Scotty Dog dress – Modcloth
  • Black Cardigan – Modcloth
  • Tights- eBay
  • Black wedge shoes (old)

No idea why but went a little AWOL this week on the blog. Just didn’t feel motivated enough to compose a thought provoking or interesting post so decided to stay well clear of the blog. It has been a crazy busy week at work and I am feeling pretty drained. I am also trying to attempt to put together a magazine on my own which in itself is quite a tedious and time consuming task.  I tend to do things like this, taking on crazy tasks that I believe I can complete and then afterwards wonder what the hell I have gotten myself into. This has been one of those weeks. Dog Days I say.

Make a Cushion Cover - beginners DIY tutorial

Hi everyone welcome to another week of Make it Monday featuring another fun tutorial for beginner sewer's like myself. This week's DIY tutorial is to make a cushion cover using a fat quarter and calico so here is what you need to begin:

  • fat quarter (cut to the size of the cushion with a 2 inch seam allowance)
  • calico (cut to the size of the cushion with a 2 inch seam allowance)
  • matching thread
  • pins
  • push buttons (3 pairs)
  • a needle
  • a pen or tailors chalk
  • a cushion of any size
Step 1: Gather your materials and measure out the fabric required, leaving a seam allowance of around 2 inches.

Step 2: Pin the material right sides facing each other and leaving the top of the cushion un-pinned

Step 3: Sew all around the fabric with a zig-zag stitch

Step 4: On the top edge of the un-closed seam, hand sew in the push buttons ensuring the are lined up correctly - I used a pen to mark where I wanted the buttons to go.

Then turn inside out (the right way around)

add the cushion, fluff the cushion and close the push buttons

you now have a brand new cushion cover - feel free to add pretty things to it like lace, yo-yos or appliqu├ęs!

Out of Focus

what I wore:

  • Vintage babydoll dress – Etsy
  • Pink tutu – Valleygirl
  • White socks – eBay
  • Cream brogues – Seychelles

I took these photos last week and didn’t expect them to be out of focus but I didn’t set my camera up properly as it was a hot day and I just wanted to get back to the safety of the indoors (with air-conditioning)

I have to admit I really hate the way my legs are looking and am very grateful for the diet/lifestyle change I am on at the moment. I know it will be an uphill battle to lose the weight I have gained over the past 2 years but in the end it will be worth it.

Have a great weekend everyone!

I have many favourite outfit combinations but I have to say that one of my all time favourites is definitely mixing black and white stripes with green. It just goes so incredibly well together that whenever I pick up something green to wear I automatically want to mix it with stripes.

Do you have some fave outfit combos? What are they?

I took these photos last week after work when I decided to go for a little stroll. I found this nice park that doesn't look like many people use it which would be great for pics. Sorry these pics aren't perfect the daylight was going and I forgot to swap over to my 50mm lens.

So far my diet I started about a week and half ago is going well. I have lost 2 kilos so far which is amazing but it has been hard. The worst part about losing weight is it gets much harder the longer you do and the closer you get to your goal weight. I don't have to worry yet as my goal weigh is another 12 kilos away.
I do admit that I feel a lot healthier but I am still getting hungry which is annoying. I suppose when you overeat for so long it takes a while to get back to eating like a normal, healthy person again.
Hope everyone is having a nice week so far.

Make It Monday: How to make a dress into a skirt

Hi everyone. So I have decided to introduce a new feature which will be every Monday called Make It Monday. Each week I will have a new fun do it yourself project for you to try at home yourself.

I hope this will be fun for my readers but also for myself. This week’s project is how to to turn an old dress into a skirt. It is super easy and seeing as I am a beginner sewer this project is perfect for beginners and intermediate alike.

October Outfit Recap

Just a quick recap of the outfits I have worn in October in case you may have missed any. It has been a crazy month hoping for a good next few months and to stay on track with my goals.
